Hurricaine Season is Here!
The official start to Florida hurricane season is June 1st!
Here are some things that you can do to prepare for hurricane season:
- Remove weak and dead trees or tree limbs on your property. This will help prevent broken limbs from becoming property damaging projectiles during a wind storm
- Know whether your home is in a storm surge flood zone! Storm surge is normally the most damaging aspect of a hurricane or tropical storm
- Have plans for where you will go if you evacuate, when you will leave (maybe early to avoid traffic jams), and how family members and friends can contact each other.
- If you have to evacuate, make sure you have a "Hurricane Readiness" bag ready with important papers, such as your home owners insurance policy, prescription drugs, etc.
- Have an evacuation or survival kit ready with nonperishable food, water, a first aid kit and other things you'll need.
- Have a battery-powered radio and a battery-powered television for keeping up with the latest advisories.
- Install hurricane shutters or purchase precut 1/2" outdoor plywood boards for each window of your home. Install anchors for the plywood and predrill holes in the plywood so that you can put it up quickly.
